Study for The Great Chicago Fire Cyclorama rediscovered

Wednesday, 11 December 2013

A long-lost artifact has been re-discovered in the collection of Chicago History Museum.

A collaborator who was working in the Museum’s paintings storage area spotted a large, rolled up object lying on top of a wooden cabinet. It was wrapped in tissue paper and tagged with a handwritten note, stating that it was a study for the Great Chicago Fire cyclorama by H. H. Gross. He couldn’t find a catalog number that would further identify the piece but made plans with his colleagues to unroll it at a later date for further investigation. In August 2013 the study had been unrolled at the museum.
