A complicated job for the restorers from the Panorama Mesdag: a canvas of over 200 square meters, the so-called velum, was replaced by a new one. According to the museum, the tent-like canvas had to be replaced after 60 years. The velum was affected by dust and water.
The velum hangs below the window and protects the panorama from 1881 to the incident light. The task is complicated because the scaffolding must not damage the masterpiece of Mesdag. The restorers are especially careful of the decor at the base of the painting, which represents the dunes of Scheveningen.
When the curtain hangs, is the culmination of a four-year renovation of the Hague Museum. A new building part was added, so there is now more space to show the rest of the museum's collection. The museum has been open continuously during the whoel restoration work.
