Cyclorama of Jerusalem To Close October 14, 2018

Saturday, 06 October 2018

Definitive closing of the Cyclorama of Jerusalem in Quebec, Canada.

The Cyclorama of Jérusalem has been on display in Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré,Quebec, Canda since 1895. The painting which depicts the crucifixion was made in Munich by Bruno Piglhein from 1878 to 1882 and is 14 meters in height (45 feet) and 110 meters in circumference (360 feet).

The painting is a heritage panorama the 9th oldest to date that was on view to the public and the only panorama in Canada. The rotunda, though it has been updated many times, is original and is the oldest rotunda in North America.

The experience of the Cyclorama of Jerusalem is reflective of another era of tourism in Canada and around the world. Viewers have noted that the audio is "fundamentally analogue from the tape cassettes powering the narration to the mechanical lamp that grinds round the painting spotlighting different scenes in time with the commentary."

This is a huge loss for the panorama community. More information about the panorama can be found on the Cyclorama's website which featured a PDF written by Richard Dubé and Paul Trépanier on the Heritage of the Cyclorama: http://cyclorama.quebec
