International Panorama Conference

The 32nd International Panorama Council Conference

Panoramas, Immersive Media, and Lost Worlds

hosted by the

University of Iowa Museum of Natural History

in Iowa City, Iowa | September 26-30, 2023

The International Panorama Council formally invites you to join its 32nd International Panorama Council Conference at the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History, Iowa City, Iowa, USA, September 26 - 30, 2023 with an optional post-conference excursion on September 30, 2023.

Panoramas and other apparatus of immersive media, both in the past and today, strive to recreate worlds that might otherwise be “lost.” They do this in many ways. They transport us across distances we cannot travel, into experiences we cannot access, and into imaginary realms we cannot conjure ourselves; and/or they reconstitute long-ago worlds that the passing of time has erased. And all too often, panoramas themselves become lost: unable to survive, many are known only through their fragmented presence in the historical archive

The conference will present a diverse range of session topics centered around panoramic media including: Lost Panoramas; The Immersive Worlds of Panoramas; Lost Voices; Panorama Conservation and Saving the Faux Terrain (Round Table); Panoramic Vision; Panoramas and Historical Context; Virtual Reality and Lost Worlds; Virtual Reality and Recovering Panoramas .

Optional post-conference tour:

The shuttle will depart the Graduate Hotel for the post conference excursion on Saturday, September 30 at 9 am.  The excursion will feature a tour of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA).  CRMA Executive Director Sean Ulmer, will lead a tour of the museum. The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art features 16 galleries full of art and a regular rotation of exhibitions. With more than 7,800 works of art spanning many  eras, the collection is particularly strong in American art, especially from the first half of the 20th century. There are a number of artists the Museum holds in great depth—including the world's largest collection of works of art by Grant Wood a portion of which are on view at all times.  After the tour of the museum, we will have the unique opportunity to visit Grant Wood’s studio.  Wood (1891-1942) was a prominent member of the Regionalist movement. He lived and worked in this studio from 1924 to 1935.  His most famous painting, American Gothic, was painted in this studio in 1930. Grant Wood altered this space so that it could be a living area for himself and his mother as well as his studio and a stage for theater productions. His charm, wit and skill is apparent in the creation of his space.

Following the tour of the studio and museum, participants will travel to New Bo City Market (https://www.newbocitymarket.org/explore-the-market ) where they will receive a voucher with which they may purchase lunch from a variety of local vendors.  After lunch, the shuttle will return to Iowa City, making a stop at the Cedar Rapids airport (approx. 1:30 pm) for those wishing to depart on Saturday.
