Restoration and Conservation

Conservation and restoration is an important field of activity for IPC. The organization does not execute restoration and conservation projects, but is advising in this field and links specialists and experience. Papers on restoration and conservation of panoramas are part of our yearly International Panorama Conferences.

One of IPC’s main goals is the preservation of the few surviving heritage panoramas. But conservation and restoration becomes more and more important for younger panoramas as well.

Many cultural works are sensitive to mechanical damages and environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and exposure to light and ultraviolet light. They must be protected in a controlled environment where such variables are maintained within a range of damage-limiting levels. Panoramas confront the specialists with extraordinary conditions and tasks. The giant size of these works force restores and conservators to use special techniques.

IPC calls all owners of panoramas and other artefacts to invest in so called preventive conservation. It is an essential responsibility of persons in charge to create and maintain a protective environment for the panoramas and objects in their collection. They should carefully monitor the condition of panoramas and collections to determine when an artefact requires conservation work and the services of a qualified conservator.
