Panoramas as Memory of the World

The International Panorama Council formally invites you to join its 33rd International Panorama Council Conference at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, October 02–04, 2024, with an optional post-conference excursion on October 05–06, 2024.

Panoramas as Memory of the World focuses on the memorial aspect of the panorama's media form. Panoramas, in their various forms, seek to create an immersive experience by transporting visitors into another space. They commemorate events or celebrate memorable landscapes. Through their installations in staged ecosystems and their tailored mechanisms of illusion, they also create memories. The pioneering role of panoramas as the first immersive media can be assessed in the light of technological developments, from mechanical analog back then to computer-assisted digital today.

The conference will present a diverse range of session topics centered around panoramic media including: socio-cultural and political roles of panoramic memories; the mechanics of illusion, from analog to digital; digitization and conservation; Memory of the World (Unesco program) and panoramas.

An optional two day post-conference tour begins on Saturday, October 05 and concludes Sunday, October 06.

On Saturday, October 05 the shuttle will depart the EPFL at 8:30. The excursion will feature a first stop at Murten, for a visit of its museum, followed by a walk through the city and the battlefield of the Battle of Murten (Murten Panorama). After a lunch at Murten, the shuttle will take us to Lucerne for a visit of the Bourbaki Panorama, followed by a dinner in Lucerne. Attendees willing to stop the post-conference tour in Lucerne, shall organise their transport themselves Saturday from 17:00 onwards.

On Sunday, October 06, the shuttle will depart from Lucerne at 9:00. This second day features a tour of the Einsiedeln panorama (Crucifixion of Christ) in the morning, followed by a tour of the Wocher panorama in Thun.

The shuttle will then stop near Bern at a transportation hub so those traveling from Zurich or Geneva can transfer to the airport. Finally, the shuttle will return to Lausanne for those staying another night at the conference venue.

GENERAL PROGRAM

• Day 1 | Wednesday, October 02, 9:00-15:30 (MoW Unesco workshops – Optional for conference attendees); 16:00-21:00 (Welcome events and activities; dinner);
• Day 2 | Thursday, October 03, 9:00-18:00 (conference sessions, breaks, lunch and free evening);
• Day 3 | Friday, October 04, 9:00-21:30 (conference sessions, coffee breaks, lunch and dinner, group photo);
• Day 4 and 5 | Saturday/Sunday, October 05/06, (optional 2 days post-conference tour).

PROGRAM

The General Conference Schedule provides an overview of the events. A more detailed provisional program will be available by mid June.

The conference (October 02–04) will include a keynote speech by Oliver Grau, Professor for Image Science and Dean of the Department for Cultural Studies at Danube University. The main conference includes 6 conference sessions, workshops and roundtables, and two guided tours, including the Laboratory for Experimental Museology which houses large scale interactive and immersive visualization systems, featuring the DIAGRAM project; and the EPFL Pavillons, featuring the exhibition "Musica ex Machina: Machines Thinking Musically." There is also an optional two-day post-conference tour (further details below).

Deadline for registrations and payment: June 30, 2024. 

In the meantime, please, pay your membership as a new member or renew your membership. This gesture can offer a discount for you when you register at the conference.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Hotels are not included in the registration fee. Conference participants are free to organize their stay as they see fit. Note that the EPFL campus is situated in between Lausanne and Morges, on the shores of the lake Leman.

There are two hotels with pre-booked rooms, on a special conference rate. Both these hotels are within walking distance from the conference venue and will offer a local public transport card included in the price. There are 40 pre-booked rooms on a first come first served basis. Information on how to book (with conference discount price) is available in the registration form.

Hotel 1: Starling Hotel (4 stars)

Hotel 2:  Swiss Tech Hotel (2 stars)

If you are registered for the post-conference tour, book until Saturday, October 05; the start of the tour is at the conference location. The overnight stay in Lucerne is included in the registration fee for the post-conference tour (no need to book!). The end of the post-conference tour is at the conference venue on Sunday, October 06, late afternoon. On route, there will be an afternoon stop at Bern station for those who need connecting trains to Zurich or Geneva airports. If you want to book an additional night after the post-conference tour, we suggest booking in Bern or in Lausanne.

TRANSPORT TO EPFL Lausanne 

Flight information:

Fly to either Geneva or Zurich. Train connectionS  are available from both locations to Lausanne or Morges (From Zurich, about 2h30min, one-way full price CHF 82 and from Geneva, about 1h, one-way full price CHF 29). Check the Swiss Railway website for timetables.

Ground Transport:

Access to the campus via the main train stations (Lausanne, Renens, Morges)

The EPFL campus is easily accessible thanks to a dense urban public transport network and its proximity to major rail connections. The site is served by the m1 metro, tl buses (1, 31) and MBC buses (701, 705). Check the Transport Lausannois (tl) website for timetables.

From Lausanne station by bus (about 25 minutes)

• tl1 direct route towards EPFL/Colladon, stop at the terminus

From Lausanne station by metro—via Le Flon (about 20 minutes)

• m2 towards Croisettes, get off at Lausanne-Flon
• m1 metro towards Renens gare, EPFL stop

From Renens station by bus (about 11 minutes)

• tl31 at Renens gare sud stop towards Venoge sud, UNIL-Sorge stop or Argand stop

From Renens station by metro (about 6 minutes)

• m1 towards Lausanne-Flon, EPFL stop

From Morges station by bus (about 15–20 minutes)

Presenters will be required to upload their completed, ready-to-use presentation files to a Dropbox folder by end-of-day Date. More information will be provided by email.
